Tech unemployment dipped in December to 2 percent, the lowest level since November 2023, according to a new CompTIA analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. Meanwhile, the national unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1 percent.

Although employment within the tech sector itself sank by 6,117 jobs between November and December, tech employment throughout the broader economy increased by a net new 7,000 positions. The nation’s tech workforce continues to stand at roughly 6.5 million workers.

There were 434,415 active employer job postings for tech positions in December, including 165,189 newly added during the month,” added CompTIA’s report. “Both totals were down from November. Positions in software development and engineering, IT project management, cybersecurity, data science and analysis and tech support had the most activity.” Companies hiring aggressively for tech pros in December included Amazon, Accenture, Deloitte, and more.

No matter what the state of the economy as we head into 2025, tech professionals who’ve mastered in-demand skills such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud engineering have the best shot at landing the position of their dreams. In Dice’s most recent Tech Salary Report, tech professionals should think along the following lines as they seek to leverage new opportunities:

  • Utilize AI Thoughtfully: While AI is a powerful tool, remember that human ingenuity and creativity remain invaluable. Strive to be a “human-AI hybrid,” leveraging AI technology to enhance your work without becoming overly reliant on it. This will help you adapt to a tech market that is quickly adopting new AI tools.

  • Build on Cultural Progress: A positive and inclusive workplace culture is essential for job satisfaction and productivity. Advocate for initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Don't be afraid to make proactive suggestions if you see opportunities for improvement.

  • Optimize Remote Work Integration: If remote work is a part of your professional life, create a dedicated workspace and establish effective communication habits. Prioritize building strong relationships with colleagues, both in-person and virtually.

The average tech salary stood at $112,521 in 2024, but could shoot higher for those with the right mix of technical and soft skills. Keep that in mind as you plot your career progression for this year!
