Scammers have become increasingly sophisticated at targeting job seekers, often mimicking real companies, job postings, and emails, making it difficult to identify fraudulent activity. Be wary of any request for upfront payments for training and equipment or for your personal information, which can be used for identity theft and financial fraud. Here are some tips to avoid job scams and stay alert during your search:
1. Protect your personal information
- Never share your social security number prior to being hired.
- Never provide your bank account or payment information. Legitimate companies will not ask you to pay upfront for training, equipment, or job applications.
- Only include your preferred contact method (email or phone number) on your profile and resume. If you're not comfortable, you can remove your personal contact info from your resume and leverage Dice communication channels (Private Email and IM).
2. Communicate using trusted channels
Use trusted channels that allow you control your information, such as Dice Private Email or Dice Instant Messaging. If you’re communicating outside of Dice via personal emails, texts, calls, video platforms, or chat applications, be sure to confirm that the email address and phone number are legitimate for the company you’re communicating with.
Use the Dice iOS and Android Mobile Apps to receive trusted push notifications.
Be wary of WhatsApp and other suspicious channels.
3. Spot the red flags
Jobs or salaries that seem too good to be true
Grammar and other errors in a job posting or communication
Requests for unnecessary personal information or upfront payments
Email addresses that aren’t associated with the company name. Most companies use their company domain as their email address instead of @yahoo.com, @gmail.com or @outlook.com
Urgency or pressure to make decisions quickly
Suspicious links or attachments. Never click or download attachments from unsolicited emails or texts.
4. Research the company
Verify the company by looking at their website, other job postings, and online reviews. Make sure they have a good online presence.
If you're unsure about a recruiter's legitimacy, reach out to the company directly, and they can verify if the recruiter is working on their behalf.
Cross-check the contact information on the job posting with the company’s website. Legitimate companies usually include a business address, a valid phone number, and company email address.
5. If it seems suspicious, report it
If you encounter a job posting that seems suspicious, report it immediately with our easy “Report a Job” feature in the top right corner of the posting.
Report any suspected fraud or spammy outreach received via Dice Private Email, Instant Messaging or Connections.
