Job Summary:

The University of Colorado Cancer Center is seeking a bioinformatics researcher with experience in one or more of these areas: bioinformatics analysis, algorithm development, and/or pipeline development and application. The ideal candidate will have applied or developed bioinformatics methods applicable to cancer research in at least one, but preferably several -omics types. We have particular interest in individuals with expertise in bulk and/or single cell transcriptomics. This position will be part of a team of highly experienced bioinformatics analysts that work across an array of -omics technologies. The ideal candidate will be able to effectively collaborate, organize, and lead the analysis across multiple projects. This position will also offer the opportunity for learning and growth in cutting edge technologies and cancer biology through active collaborations.

This position will be fully supported by the Cancer Center. The Bioinformatics team works in a hybrid environment and this position will allow for a combination of in person and remote work with at least 1 day per week in the office.

Examples of Duties Performed

Bioinformatics and Data Analysis (80%)
  • Provide the bioinformatics expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of biomedical investigators and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders in the area of bioinformatics and data analysis
  • Perform scientifically rigorous data management and bioinformatic analyses
  • Develop and disseminate a variety of tools designed to access relevant clinical and sample data
  • Develop and implement complex analysis pipelines, programming, and data visualization techniques for multi-layered -omics datasets (transcriptome, epigenome, proteome, microbiome, etc.)
  • Assist with the design and development of bioinformatics-related programming projects and analysis pipelines
  • Write custom scripts to access databases and analyze data
  • Independently and creatively identify bioinformatic and data management solutions
  • Provide method, figure, and analysis write ups for papers and grants
  • Actively track the projects, report findings, and communicate progress with collaborating investigators

Process Improvement and Leadership (20%)
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members
  • Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Maintain subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies
  • Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and share results with leadership
  • Prepare for, attend, and contribute to weekly group meetings

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of #1 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Research Instructor, Senior Research Instructor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Research Instructor
  • PhD or equivalent experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Pharmacology, Cancer Biology or related fields
  • Three (3) years bioinformatics analyses experience

Senior Research Instructor
  • PhD or equivalent experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Pharmacology, Cancer Biology or related fields
  • Five (5) years bioinformatics analyses experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology or related fields
  • Experience analyzing data using a programming language, such as R or python
  • Experience with the analysis of multiple -omics types, with high preference to single cell and bulk transcriptomics
  • Experience with Seurat and other single cell analysis R packages
  • Experience with high-performance computing
  • A publication record in cancer research
  • Demonstrated ability to train researchers in bioinformatics skills and techniques
  • An active GitHub repository and experience with working in a software development team
  • A published example of a developed algorithm, pipeline, or database with application to -omics or image data

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Expert knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in biomedical research
  • Expert ability to analyze and solve complex problems and apply quantitative analytical approaches
  • Demonstrated fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java, C++) and willingness to learn new programming languages as necessary

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Research Instructor: $100,000-120,000

Sr. Research Instructor: $100,000-200,000
