Primary Responsibilities

HDR currently has an opening for a Transportation Hydraulics Engineer to join our team in St. Louis, MO. The primary duties include working in a team with other project engineers on the detailed drainage design for urban and rural roadway, highway, transit, and civil site projects throughout the Missouri/Kansas Region. The candidate must be able to demonstrate an ability to collaborate well with an interdisciplinary team to efficiently achieve overall project goals. The candidate will also be expected to work independently on smaller projects.

This role will be responsible for the following stormwater design elements, but not limited to:

  • Understanding of local, state, and regional stormwater regulations and stormwater design manuals.
  • Stormwater regulatory and permitting process.
  • Study and design of stormwater management facilities
    • Transportation drainage
    • Hydrology
    • Storm sewers
    • Storm Culverts
    • Best management practices (BMPs) for water quality treatment
    • Water detention facilities
    • Open channel modeling
    • Surface water runoff collection
    • Site drainage
  • Hydrologic and Stormwater/drainage modeling
  • Assist with writing reports and technical memos
  • Preparing construction/contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, Transportation, or Structural Engineering, or a related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 3 years of experience related to stormwater design
  • MicroStation or AutoCAD experience along with the production of construction plans
  • Self-motivated to complete tasks and learn new skills
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to work in the office to allow for collaboration


Preferred Qualifications

  • Local candidates
  • Experience with The Metropolitan Sewer District of St. Louis permitting process
  • Experience with common industry software (OpenRoads, Civil 3D, PondPak, StormCAD, XPSWMM, Culvert Master, Flow Master, InRoads Drainage, Geopak Drainage, ArcGIS Pro, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, etc.)
