Job Details

Position Summary
The Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) is seeking a full stack software developer and system administrator with a deep understanding of programming, web application technologies, and Linux systems. The candidate will join the center's internal Information Services team, working in a collaborative cross-institution environment to produce, configure, and support software and systems with a focus on research data management and data operations. The GLBRC is a multi-institutional grant with diverse needs for custom software, systems, and processes to support research activities and grant operations. The candidate will work effectively on a team contributing to the design and development of custom web applications and command line software and help administer systems infrastructure including docker container-based application hosting and high-performance computing systems used by researchers. They will assist with ongoing maintenance and support of existing systems, software, and data analysis tools including providing user training and documentation. The candidate will also assist with installation, maintenance, and support of video conferencing solutions in GLBRC conference rooms and provide IT support to GLBRC offices and labs.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment while independently communicating with both technical and non-technical staff. They will proactively identify and help address the diverse technology needs of the GLBRC, taking the initiative to seek out information and resources as needed. This position is remote friendly. However, this position requires occasional same-day onsite work to support equipment in our labs, business office, and conference rooms. Applicants are expected to reside within 60 miles of MSU's main campus in East Lansing.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience
  • Significant experience with one or more programming languages
  • Experience with Linux operating system administration
  • Experience with web application development including CSS/HTML, JS, and SQL

  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical users
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL
  • Experience with Docker and Docker Swarm
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD automation tools including Gitlab CI and Ansible
  • Familiarity working with researchers in a higher education setting
  • Familiarity with high performance computing systems
  • Familiarity with data science tools and languages including R, Python, Conda, Jupyter, and RStudio
  • Familiarity with end-user workstation support and training
