RESPONSIBILITIES

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

(1) Manage hazardous material transportation compliance for The Sherwin-Williams Company (SW).

  • Provide subject matter expertise and support in all aspects of hazardous materials transportation compliance throughout SW. Groups supported include: Paint Stores Group, Performance Coatings Group, Consumer Brands Group, and Global Supply Chain.
  • Interpret and communicate regulatory requirements to SW personnel and any internal customers, including determining compliance status and any sales restrictions.
  • Work with all Divisions and Groups within the company to implement regulatory changes in a timely manner. Develop and implement hazardous materials transportation policy and procedures company-wide with the support of leadership.
  • Prepare and execute hazardous materials transportation regulatory training for use throughout the company. Customize training programs to address the special operational or situational needs of the various groups and divisions. As appropriate, provide in-person or web-based training to employees throughout SW.
  • Support Package Engineering as necessary for compliance with package selection related to hazardous materials transportation regulations. Review and approve hazardous materials transportation-related components of packaging/package labels, as requested by the Divisions/Groups.
  • Respond to regulatory agency requests for data to show compliance status. Assist Legal in preparing defense positions and all other litigation matters related to hazardous materials transportation as needed.
  • Work closely with teammates to ensure SW hazardous products and materials are properly classified for road, ocean, and air transportation globally.


(2) Monitor Emerging Regulations.

  • Understand and interpret current hazardous materials transportation regulations as well as any regulatory developments.
  • Determine the impact of proposed hazardous materials transportation regulatory requirements to SW and coordinate planning and implementation of changes required to accomplish continued regulatory compliance.
  • Review and comment on proposed hazardous materials transportation regulations during development by local, state, and federal agencies through various industry groups.
  • Act as a company spokesperson and SME in all matters of hazardous materials transportation related rule development. Represent SW on Transportation and Distribution Steering Committee of American Coatings Association, and on any regulatory workgroups formed during rule developments.


(3) Provide Regulatory Transport Support for Key Operational and Business Initiatives.

  • Serve as hazardous materials transportation subject matter expert during domestic and international integration and acquisition activities. Work closely with the integration team and all other areas of Corporate Product Stewardship throughout the integration of domestic/international sites into SW operating systems.
  • Guide the review of formulas and other product data for international or domestically acquired companies, ensuring hazardous materials transportation regulatory correctness and compliance with SW policy and practice.
  • Work toward "one regulatory truth" throughout all systems and operations and guide integrated operations into hazardous materials transportation regulatory compliance while ensuring SW preferred practices are followed.
  • As budgeting allows, visit domestic and international sites to better inform and educate and to conduct facility audits to assist in hazardous materials transportation regulatory compliance.
  • Track incident and release data to determine trends. Determine whether trends are related to packaging, SW operations, or carrier actions. Evaluate accuracy of carrier reporting and monitor government databases to ensure reporting is correct. Serve as liaison between carriers and SW in the areas of regulatory and operational compliance.


QUALIFICATIONS

FORMAL EDUCATION:

Required:

  • Bachelor's in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field from an accredited institution


Preferred:

  • Master's in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field from an accredited institution


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • 5+ years' experience in hazardous materials transportation compliance
  • Global knowledge/understanding of hazardous materials transportation regulations
  • Experience managing compliance programs
  • Experience managing complex, cross-functional projects


Preferred:

  • 8+ years' experience in similar function
  • Current IMDG, IATA, ADR, and DOT certifications
  • Experience in professional or trade association working groups


TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Experience in paint & coatings or chemical industry
  • Must be able to work with and respond to all levels of management, regulatory agencies, industry groups, , peers, laboratories, and any other internal and external customers.
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Must be able interpret the impact of developing regulations on SW
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to present and speak publicly


Preferred:

  • Candidates must have strong organizational and analytical skills
