JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Physics at Penn State is seeking to hire a Research Lab Assistant. This individual will work with Dr. Sathyaprakash Bangalore on Critical Role of LIGO-India in the Era of Next Generation Terrestrial Gravitational-Wave Observatories.
The National Science Foundation has funded the Conceptual Design Study of Cosmic Explorer, an observatory that will have ten times higher sensitivity than the current LIGO and Virgo detectors. An important science goal for the next generation detectors is facilitating multimessenger astronomy, which means following up gravitational wave events with optical, IR, radio and other electromagnetic telescopes. This can only be done if gravitational-wave detectors can precisely localize the events. The goal of this research project is to evaluate if LIGO-India operating with a single Cosmic Explorer observatory in the USA together with Einstein Telescope in Europe can localize events can facilitate multimessenger astronomy to the same extent as two Cosmic Explorer observatories and one Einstein Telescope. The project will use Fisher Information matrix and Bayesian inference to evaluate the multimessenger capabilities of several detector networks involving LIGO-India.
