Job Overview

The Software Engineering Manager at Macy's Technology plays a pivotal role in guiding the team's technical direction and integration with enterprise solutions. They establish effective partnerships across Macy's Technology.

Collaborating with stakeholders at various levels (including Senior Leadership, departmental management, project teams, Infrastructure and Field Services leaders, and enterprise architects), the Manager contributes to architecture, requirements, and implementation of technical solutions. They possess a blend of systems and technology expertise, coupled with strong thought leadership, enabling them to make informed and balanced technical decisions that deliver key enabling features to support the business.

The Software Engineering Manager champions the use of modern software development practices, placing emphasis on automation and Reliability Engineering. They build and lead high-performing software engineering teams, ensuring the delivery and support of omni-channel applications and services with speed and scalability. Driving innovation in both technology and process, they inspire teams to achieve outstanding results in a fast-paced environment.

What You Will Do
  • Recruit, coach, and mentor individuals to cultivate a strong cross-functional organization.
  • Design and develop scalable software solutions.
  • Establish and oversee software delivery, systems integration, and developer support tools.
  • Collaborate with other technical teams to ensure the realization of technical strategies, architecture guidelines, and standards through efficient collaboration with architecture, development, DevOps, and other teams.
  • Strategize and lead technology evaluations for various critical areas in close collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Coordinate geographically distributed engineering scrum teams using agile development and DevOps best practices.
  • Introduce innovative ideas regularly to enhance our ability to achieve customer objectives. Establish clear, measurable quality goals for the organization based on data-driven insights.
  • Promote a culture of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback mechanisms, and performance metrics.

Skills You Will Need

Systems and Technology Expertise: Deep understanding of systems and technology, coupled with strong thought leadership, enabling informed and balanced technical decision-making to deliver key features supporting business objectives.

Team Leadership: Effective leadership in building and leading high-performing software engineering teams, driving innovation in both technology and processes to achieve outstanding results in a fast-paced environment.

Strategic Planning: Ability to strategize and lead technology evaluations for critical areas, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with technical strategies and standards.

Agile and DevOps Practices: Proficiency in coordinating geographically distributed engineering scrum teams using agile development and DevOps best practices.

Innovative Thinking: Capacity to introduce innovative ideas regularly to enhance customer objectives, along with establishing clear, measurable quality goals based on data-driven insights.

Technical Proficiency: Broad and deep understanding of technologies including Java, Spring framework, Front End technologies like ReactJS/Angular, modern system architecture patterns, Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform), cloud service providers (preferably Google Cloud Platform), SQL/noSQL databases, and data management principles.

Experience with Packaged Software Solutions: Preferred experience in implementing third-party packaged software solutions such as MDM, ERP, or WMS.

Communication Skills: Effective communication of technical information and solutions to all levels of the business, along with the ability to articulate technical issues clearly.

Project Management: Capacity to manage multiple projects effectively, identifying primary and secondary objectives, prioritizing time, and communicating timelines to team members.

Ownership Mentality: Desire and ability to take ownership of products/projects, driving them towards successful outcomes.
