Description

The UT Space Institute Research Engineering and Operations Department in Tullahoma, Tennessee is seeking a Research Associate, Laser (Researcher 3, MR11). One vacancy, regular, full-time exempt monthly paid position with excellent benefits. Salary dependent upon education and experience.

Position Summary:

Motivated, goal-orientated Researcher specialized in materials science and testing, laser applications or computational modeling and simulation. Researcher is expected to collect, interpret, describe, and document analytical and evaluative data as well as the design, development and maintenance of laboratory apparatus to support laboratory/research-related activities. Researcher works independently and as part of a larger research team on funded and institutional projects that align with the strategic vision of the institute. Researcher will also be expected to occasionally mentor graduate students. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Function/Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain laboratory apparatus.
  • Responsible for collection of information and data through limited observation, experimentation, interviewing, and other methods, including the use of electronic equipment and devices.
  • Evaluates, analyzes, and interprets collected data.
  • Independently conducts work complementary to the overall research objectives and contributes to the work of other researchers to complete projects.
  • Compile information into report form. Write papers, and draw conclusions.
  • May be required to multitask multiple projects under the direction of multiple principal investigators.
  • Reviews research protocols to determine feasibility.
  • Conducts all aspects of work on the project(s) to varying degrees.
  • Contributes to all phases of research, from proposal development to publication.
  • Performs work independently under limited supervision by a principal investigator who reviews work through periodic conferences and evaluation of data collected.
  • Confers with principal investigators concerning the basic objectives and broad approach required to research.
  • Provide leadership in maintaining laboratory safety and compliance for state, federal and university policies and regulations.
  • Direct staff and graduate students in the laboratory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and maintain strict timelines.
  • Ability to work in an environment conforming to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements.
  • Knowledge of research or lab equipment, materials, and processes related to lab/facility operations.
  • Ability to gather, document and report results.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance.
Education/Experience

  • Requires a Master's degree, preferred in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics or aerospace engineering and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Prefers experience working in a research laboratory.
Supervisory/Work Direction Responsibilities

  • This position provides work direction to others (includes students).
