Job Details

Tesla is seeking an Automation Test Engineer to join our Reliability Test team, focusing on the development, maintenance, and enhancement of in-house reliability test systems designed to verify the robustness of our vehicle products. In this role, you will design, develop, and refine testing systems specifically for traction inverters while supporting electrical, software, and controls debugging to ensure continuous improvement of these systems. This position is ideal for someone with a passion for creating groundbreaking engineering products that shape the future of energy infrastructure, and who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and refine automated testing solutions for both component- and system-level testing of bidirectional high-voltage inverters
  • Create data pipelining and processing solutions using SQL databases
  • Produce and maintain automation scripts for reliability testing, interfacing with test equipment (e.g., power supplies, DAQs, oscilloscopes, power analyzers) and devices-under-test (DUTs)
  • Collaborate closely with design, reliability, quality, test, and firmware engineering teams to ensure reliability test stations meet or exceed all required standards
  • Identify and address limitations when expectations are not met
  • Conduct proactive data analysis to monitor test unit performance and predict failures before they become critical
  • Apply engineering fundamentals and a systems-level perspective to serve as a primary contact for the reliability test team
  • Travel domestically and internationally up to 20% as required

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Strong proficiency in Python (in both Linux and Windows environments)
  • Broad exposure to test and automation systems, including production machinery, industrial sensors, data acquisition, safety, and I/O devices (e.g., pogo-pins, pressure transducers, coolant chillers, temperature controllers, current and power meters, DAQs, PLCs)
  • Solid understanding and experience with communication protocols (e.g., CAN, serial, GPIO, USB, IP/TCP)
  • Familiarity with power converter systems such as DC/AC (inverters) and DC/DC converters
  • Understanding of electrical schematics and experience with electrical schematic design software (e.g., Altium, SOLIDWORKS Electrical, FlowCAD)
  • Experience with electrical simulation (SPICE) software (e.g., LTSpice)
  • Familiarity with general electrical and mechanical failure modes and wear-out mechanisms
