Job Summary:

Direct routine and esoteric testing at the SCPMG Regional Reference Laboratories (RRL) such as Microbiology Department including routine bacteriology, anaerobic bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, (immunology) blood bank, molecular diagnostics and autoimmune and infectious disease serology, or Core Laboratory/Chemistry Department including routine/esoteric chemistry, immunoassay, immunology, hematology, and urinalysis, or other specialty departments such as Esoteric Chemistry department, Allergy/Rheumatology, or Anatomic Pathology in Histopathology/IHC, Cytology or Flow Cytometry departments. Direct future developments of the Specialty Department and other Laboratory services throughout the SCPMG region. Provide resource to the SCPMG Physician and Health Plan Personnel. Direct the development and implementation of various new technological advances in the department ;In conjunction with Medical Directors and other technical directors, provide strategic leadership and direction to the laboratory as a whole.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for proposals, plans and implementation of appropriate procedural changes that would lead to significant improvements in technology, quality, cost structure and services.

  • Works with Medical Directors and other departmental technical directors to evaluate and develop new test technologies, select, and standardize equipment, and improve clinical effectiveness of testing.

  • Works with the Quality Departmental staff, Medical Directors, and other technical departmental directors to coordinate and develop quality assurance policies and procedures and to ensure a high level of quality performance, including compliance with regulation from federal, state, CAP and other regulatory agencies and compliance with accreditation requirements from appropriate agencies.

  • Works directly with operations directors and manager to establish and maintain operational and performance standards.

  • Develop short- and long-term goals to improve technical and service levels.

  • Research and develop state of the art methodology in microbiology to maintain and augment Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

  • Ensures competency of testing personnel throughout the department.

  • Work with operations directors and managers to plan and implement competency programs to ensure high quality within the microbiology laboratory.

  • Assist technical and managerial personnel in problem solving related to clinical testing needs.

  • Coordinate interaction between specialty physician groups as needed and technical staff.

  • Counsel and advise physicians/providers regarding test ordering, interpretation, and other laboratory related issues.

  • Respond to physician/provider concerns regarding all facets of laboratory testing.

  • Provide consultations to management and technical personnel to resolve technical and operational problems and facilitate remedial action to ensure performance standards are met.

  • Conduct in-services for providers/RRL staff regarding pertinent laboratory issues, new methodologys or techniques, and unusual clinical findings.

  • Interact various SCPMG clinical task force groups.

  • Research new technology and stay up to date on literature in the field.

  • Recommend new diagnostic testing methodology; research and determine the cost effectiveness of such tests before implementation in the laboratory.

  • Look for cost savings related to test internalization.

  • Author research projects and administer those approved projects in conjunction with the Investigational Review Board.

  • Analyze data; formulate conclusions and present findings of those projects.

  • Interface with public health, national scientific organizations, and Kaiser Permanente on a national level to standardize laboratory testing and instrumentation within the organization.

  • Engage in new technology research projects to promote SCPMG Regional Laboratory as state of the are, progressive microbiology department.


Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years experience in related clinical laboratory specialty


Education

  • PhD. In related field such as Chemistry, Immunology, Hematology, microbiology or Molecular Biology, or any related clinical laboratory doctoral graduate.


License, Certification, Registration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum two (2) year fellowship at CPEP accredited program.

  • Experience working with Next Gen Sequencing (NGS) in the field of Microbiology (If position in related department)


Notes:

Position does have the option to report to the North Hollywood, Sherman Way Lab (SWL) location.

Travel to both CH and SWL sites is required.

Schedule varies, AM & PM Coverage.

Work hours 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
