Description

SAIC is looking for a candidate to assist NCEP/EMC in developing land surface and lake models for the Unified Forecast System (UFS). The UFS is a comprehensive earth system model encompassing atmosphere, land, ocean, ice, wave, and aerosol components. It is adaptable for various operational and research applications across different temporal and spatial scales. The candidate will focus on developing and integrating lake models within the NOAA UFS. This position is based at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, MD.

Responsibilities

The candidate will carry out their duties independently, collaboratively, and with initiative, employing innovative methods in their primary work areas. They will work as part of a team and engage with the community to develop and enhance land surface and lake modeling, as well as support the transition to operational use.

Qualifications

Qualifications

A Master's Degree or higher in atmospheric science, geophysical science, or a related physical science is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

Required:

Advanced experience in lake and/or earth system modeling.

Advanced skill in modern programming languages, such as FORTRAN90 and Python.

Advanced skill of high performing Computing on various platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.

Knowledge of modern software development practices and version control software, in particular Git/GitHub/Gitflow.

Experience working in a UNIX environment with advanced shell scripting languages and familiar with running complex jobs.

Desired:

Experience with one or more lake models and the UFS system and its applications.

Experience in either land surface/lake or meteorological forecast model evaluation and data post-processing.

The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to work efficiently in a team environment and communicate effectively, with strong oral and written communication skills.
