Job Summary: The Design Engineer is responsible for developing detailed engineering designs for energy production, transmission, and distribution systems. This role involves collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to create innovative and efficient designs that meet technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and company standards. The Design Engineer will play a key role in ensuring that all designs are optimized for safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engineering Design and Development:
- Develop detailed designs for electrical, mechanical, and civil systems related to energy production, transmission, and distribution.
- Prepare engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
- Ensure that all designs comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company guidelines.
- Project Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other team members to develop design concepts and project plans.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering disciplines, to ensure seamless integration of designs.
- Participate in design reviews and provide technical input to ensure that project objectives are met.
- System Analysis and Optimization:
- Perform calculations and simulations to evaluate the performance and efficiency of proposed designs.
- Analyze system requirements and constraints to optimize designs for functionality, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
- Identify potential design risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure project success.
- Regulatory Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure that all designs adhere to local, state, and federal regulations, including safety codes and environmental standards.
- Collaborate with the Safety and Compliance teams to incorporate safety features into design plans.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement design changes to mitigate safety hazards.
- Documentation and Technical Reporting:
- Prepare detailed design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and material lists, for project implementation.
- Develop technical reports and presentations to communicate design concepts, progress, and results to stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate records of design modifications, calculations, and project decisions.
- Cost Estimation and Budgeting:
- Prepare cost estimates for materials, equipment, and labor based on design specifications.
- Assist project managers in developing budgets and schedules for design and construction phases.
- Monitor project costs and make design adjustments to stay within budgetary constraints.
- Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
- Research and evaluate new technologies, materials, and methods to improve design processes and outcomes.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and quality of engineering designs.
- Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and advancements in engineering design.
- Client and Stakeholder Communication:
- Communicate design concepts, options, and recommendations to clients and stakeholders in a clear and professional manner.
- Respond to client inquiries and feedback, making necessary design adjustments to meet client expectations.
- Foster positive relationships with clients, contractors, and vendors to facilitate successful project delivery.
- Support During Construction and Commissioning:
- Provide technical support during the construction and commissioning phases of projects, ensuring that designs are implemented correctly.
- Assist with troubleshooting and resolving design-related issues that arise during construction.
- Conduct site visits as needed to verify that construction activities align with design specifications.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field. A Master s degree or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering design, preferably within the energy or utility industry.
- Proven experience in designing systems for power generation, transmission, and distribution projects.
- Experience with CAD software and design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit).
- Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles, design standards, and industry regulations related to energy systems.
- Familiarity with electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering practices as they apply to energy projects.
- Understanding of renewable energy technologies and their integration into traditional energy systems is a plus.
- Skills:
- Excellent design and drafting skills, with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to develop innovative and effective design solutions.
- Proficiency in design software, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Certifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
- Additional certifications related to design engineering, project management, or renewable energy are a plus.
- Technical Requirements:
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
- Familiarity with industry-specific software for system analysis and simulation (e.g., ETAP, PSS/E) is advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to conduct site visits and inspections, which may involve working in various weather conditions, climbing ladders, and navigating industrial environments.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.
Working Conditions:
- The position may require occasional travel to project sites and facilities.
- Must be available for on-call support during critical project phases or construction activities.
Salary and Benefits: GP Energy offers a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits package, and opportunities for professional growth and development. The salary range for this role is $73,000 to $95,000.
