What you'll do

Viasat Aviation Platform Engineering is looking for a Sr. Software Engineer to join its Seattle team. The Seattle team creates and maintains software that provides Viasat's satellite communications services to commercial and private aircraft from small corporate jets to Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s. This is a wide-ranging technical role focused primarily on the ground management system and its interaction with the aircraft. The ground system is written in Java/Groovy and the airborne components in Python and C all running on Linux. The successful applicant will have advanced Java/Groovy skills.

The Viasat Seattle team is a small technical group focused on the engineering problems related to efficient and reliable use of satellite communications in the aircraft environment. We support direct passenger use (wifi in the cabin) and airline/operator use of satellite communications on board our aircraft.

The day-to-day

  • Develop new features and maintain existing ones within Viasat's hybrid airborne-ground system
  • Participate in design, development and delivery of Viasat solutions to airlines
  • Hands-on development of key technical components, frameworks, interfaces and services
  • Participate and contribute to design reviews, including review of detailed functional specifications and requirements,
  • Create and maintain technical documentation to ensure efficient planning, execution, and handover
  • Work in a small, distributed team in an Agile Linux / Open-Source development environment
  • Review existing software and infrastructure to identify areas for improvement, added scalability, quality, performance, security maintainability and architectural integrity

What you'll need

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience
  • Very strong Object-oriented programming development with Groovy/Java or equivalent
  • Solid scripting skills: Bash / Python / Perl / etc
  • Experience with Postgres SQL
  • Strong Linux skills
  • Experience working on a distributed system
  • Strong debugging skills

What will help you on the job

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Telecommunications, or related technical discipline
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes
  • Good systems security understanding
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

Salary range

$140,800.00 - $244,900.00 / annually
