What You Will Do

The Weapons Research Services - Secure Networks and Assurance (WRS-SNA) group is looking for an early career mechanical or electrical engineer to work within the Nuclear Weapons Cyber Assurance Laboratory (NWCAL). This is an excellent opportunity to leverage academic expertise in the development of advanced concepts related to hardware assurance.

After initial onboarding and training, the successful candidate will use their expertise to accomplish and grow in the following job activities:
  • Research and implement hardware and firmware assurance solutions within the NWCAL to contribute to the weapons mission at LANL.
  • Working with the NWCAL team to implement processes to strengthen the institutional hardware and firmware assurance capability
  • Assist in the development of technical products and reports related to technology assurance.
  • Work as part of a larger team to develop and improve current processes and procedures and provide technology assurance services to the LANL Weapons program.
  • Assist in the research, design, of formal methods to provide assurance for Operational Technology and other hardware implementation.
  • Participate in working groups to understand and contribute to the state of the art in technology assurance.
  • Be a critical part of the NWCAL team and execute direction received from the leadership team.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of formal methods in mechanical and/or electrical engineering.
  • The ability to understand and develop new methods, techniques, and procedures to provide technical assurance of hardware used within critical manufacturing environments.
  • An understanding of counterfeit detection methods and experience in the application of those methods.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment as a member of a team.
  • Competence in at least one programming language (Python, C, Java, Rust, etc.)
  • This position requires a DOE Top Secret "Q" clearance. The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" clearance is required.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of or experience with methods used to detect counterfeit or subverted technology
  • Knowledge of or experience with chemical analysis methos such as Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (TOF/MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy
  • Knowledge of or experience with optical imaging techniques such as Thermoreflectance Imaging and Digital Microscopy
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software and additive manufacturing

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires ship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
