Title:

Acoustics Engineer (Hybrid)

Belong. Connect. Grow. with KBR!

Around here, we define the future.

We are a company of innovators, thinkers, creators, explorers, volunteers, and dreamers. But we all share one goal: to improve the world responsibly and safely.

This position will be within the Human Factors and System Management team, which supports the Acoustics Office at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The team is responsible for ensuring safe, healthy and habitable vehicle acoustic environments, in which astronaut crews can live, communicate, and work. This means ensuring that space vehicle environments are not too noisy, do not have irritating audible sounds (except when trying to get the crew's attention), and do not have startling bursts of acoustic energy. To accomplish these goals the Acoustics Office verifies that hardware noise emissions meet requirements and that the acoustic levels on the ISS and other vehicles are monitored and are safe. The successful applicant may support this effort by working with developers to quiet their hardware. In addition, the candidate may support other programs/projects such as Orion, Extravehicular Activity (EVA) or Gateway.

Specific Duties include:

  • Duties include performing acoustic emissions testing of spaceflight or flight-like hardware. This may involve the set-up and operation of acoustic instrumentation and acoustic data acquisition systems, ensuring the acoustic compatibility of the measurement environment, and may involve the correction of data for acoustic effects such as background noise. Reports and analysis of the resulting data will also be performed including the generation of recommendations for quieting the hardware as appropriate.
  • Other responsibilities may include review of acoustic requirements, calibration of acoustic facilities, hardware design review support, noise control engineering, and research on new acoustic flight materials and equipment fan noise.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:

The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree and five years of experience, or a master's degree (preferred) and three years of experience, in acoustics, engineering or closely-related technical discipline.

Desired:

The candidate should possess knowledge of acoustics including basic theory, wave propagation, decibels, levels, reflection, and absorption and have some experience with acoustic measurement equipment that may include condenser microphones, acoustic calibrators, data acquisition systems (e.g., Bruel & Kjaer platforms such as PULSE LabShop, and BK Connect) and data processing (e.g., MATLAB, Excel).

SKILLS/TRAINING

Required:

The candidate must have demonstrated leadership capabilities and be very detail-oriented. The qualified applicant must also have excellent oral and written communication skills, including effective communication between external groups as well as report writing. The candidate must be able to handle a variety of work expectations, be a 'go-getter' and be able to work independently after initial training as well as collaboratively.

Desired:

Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., NASA-STD-3001) is desired. Candidate should have the ability to effectively interact with customers at all levels.

Relocation assistance is available.
