ECS is seeking an Engineering Lead, Elastic to work in our Fairfax, VA office . Please Note: This position is contingent upon contract award.

Job Description:

ECS is seeking talented professionals who love a challenge to join us in building the next-generation Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) Cyber data solution. The CDM Program is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's (CISA) dynamic approach to strengthening the cybersecurity of Federal networks and systems through better awareness and visibility into their security posture and cyber threats. ECS is responsible for designing, building, deploying, operating, and maintaining a complete 'Data Services' solution which includes the collection, normalization, visualization, and sharing of cyber data from more than 100 Federal agencies. The CDM Data Services product is a cloud-hosted solution comprised of multiple Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS), software configuration packages, and custom code which work together to operate as an integrated solution tailored to meet DHS requirements.

ECS is seeking a detail oriented, diligent, and energetic ELK Stack (Elasticsearch) Engineer to lead Elastic implementation. This role will have the opportunity to work with 10+ Elastic Certified Engineers and 2 'Elastic Engineer of the Year' awardees. The ideal ELK Stack (Elasticsearch) Engineer candidate must be able to work dynamically, proactively and both independently and as part of a team to achieve program objectives. This candidate is considered a subject matter expert in the ELK stack and will drive design and best practices in implementation across the program. As a lead, this role is also charged with aiding recruitment, training, management, and retainment of a team of Senior to Junior level Elastic engineers, ensuring quality across all ELK stack implementations. This person primarily performs duties of:
  • Working with the team to design, document, build, secure, and maintain Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana (ELK Stack), Beats, and Elastic Cloud Enterprise (ECE) solutions deployed to support production and non-production deployments.
  • Working closely with architects, engineers, and integrators to assess customer requirements and to design and support an ELK Stack solution to ensure compliance with CDM data requirements
  • Follow life cycle processes to move solutions from Dev to Test to Pre-Staging to Production
  • Configuring and maintaining Linux based Operating system files in support of the Elasticsearch products (yum updates and product version upgrades)
  • Installing and configuring Elastic solutions using ECE in non-production and production environments and ensuring communication and integration among the Elasticsearch products and data sources
  • Documenting the installation and configuration for deployment into production
  • Securing the solution using TLS, certificates, SSO/PIV authentication, and encryption technologies
  • Developing and applying quantitative and qualitative analytic methods to identify, collect, process and analyze large data sets for specified purposes
  • Designing and implementing data lifecycle management strategies (e.g., Index Lifecycle Management policies)
  • Testing data flows, troubleshooting issues, and monitoring the health of the solution and servers to maximize performance and minimize downtime
  • Working with Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) to design and implement logging and monitoring solutions.
  • Participating in group sessions including Agile meetings to ensure solution development progress meets CDM project and customer requirements
  • Serving as a trusted advisor, providing subject matter expertise, guidance, and best practice recommendations


Required Skills:
  • 10+ years of experience designing and implementing technical solutions, at least 3 of which are in a lead technical delivery role
  • 5+ years of experience architecting, implementing, and managing Elastic stack solutions (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Beats, Kibana) in production environments
  • 2+ years of experience hosting Elastic solutions on CentOS and/or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) experience
  • 2+ years of experience managing Elasticsearch instances greater than 20TB in size.
  • Experience with data ingest, Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) techniques preferable Logstash, Beats, and Kafka
  • Experience with multi-node clustering, architecture, development, implementation, and health monitoring of the Elastic stack
  • Continuous learner in the Elastic products and active community member
  • Experience utilizing of hot/warm/cold data/index lifecycle management implementations
  • Proficiency and knowledge of Elasticsearch's cross-cluster search (CCS) feature
  • Familiarity with Elastic Cloud Enterprise deployments
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure preferably AWS
  • Excellent communication, and relationship skills to articulate technical topics and build consensus among stakeholders


Desired Skills:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience with CDM tools and agencies, including CDM tools and the role they play in government environments
  • Experience with leading the execution of FISMA related programs across large and complex multi-agency environments
  • Experience supporting large Federal programs ($200M+)
  • Experience and proficiency working within the Software Development Life Cycle and working knowledge of various methodologies/frameworks such as SAFe Agile
  • Experience recruiting, developing, and managing employees as a line manager
