Digital Initiatives Specialist

University Libraries, UT Press

POSITION SUMMARY

The Digital Initiatives Specialist plays a vital role within the University of Tennessee Press, responsible for mapping, optimizing, and maintaining metadata and for maintaining and troubleshooting enterprise systems. This position requires a unique blend of technical expertise, creativity, and strong project management skills to effectively support our digital initiatives and optimize our online presence.

This position is telework eligible.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Metadata Mapping, Optimizing, and Maintenance:
    • Integrate metadata schemas and taxonomies with press content management systems, digital asset management tools, and other relevant platforms (Firebrand, Edelweiss, etc.).
    • Ensure seamless data exchange and synchronization of metadata across different systems, including ONIX and Open Access hosting partners.
    • Implement automated metadata extraction and enrichment processes, such as using natural language processing (NLP) or machine learning (ML) techniques.
    • Integrate with external data sources or APIs to supplement metadata with additional contextual information.
    • Implement schema.org markup, meta tags, and other technical SEO best practices to optimize metadata for search engine discoverability.
    • Integrate metadata with search and publishing platforms and ensure optimal indexing and retrieval of content.
    • Develop and maintain the technical infrastructure for metadata management, such as version control, archiving, and purging processes.
    • Implement automated metadata auditing and quality assurance processes.
    • Implement tools and dashboards to monitor and analyze metadata performance, such as search engine rankings, click-through rates, and user behavior.
    • Provide technical support for generating reports and insights to inform ongoing metadata optimization efforts.
  • Technical Support and Troubleshooting:
    • Work with the sales team to create, maintain and run reports from distributor databases and title management systems for data analysis.
    • Provide technical support to internal staff and external stakeholders regarding website-related issues, email marketing tools, and metadata systems.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems promptly, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
    • Conduct regular system maintenance, perform backups, and implement security measures to safeguard data and ensure system integrity.
    • Troubleshoot updating and maintenance of the press website.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required
    • Associate's Degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field
    • At least one year of experience working with metadata and/or enterprise systems, or an equivalent level of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Strong understanding of metadata standards, schemas, and taxonomies.
    • Proficiency in metadata modeling, mapping, and integration across different systems.
    • Understanding of data cleaning, normalization, and quality assurance processes.
    • Excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Proficiency in providing user-friendly troubleshooting and technical support for enterprise-related tools and systems.
    • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work independently and cross functionally.
    • Ability to deliver training.
  • Preferred
    • Bachelor's Degree in Computer science, IT, or related field
    • Experience working with a book or journal publisher.
    • Experience with Supadu.
    • Experience with Firebrand.
  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Familiarity with Supadu, Firebrand, and/or Edelweiss.
    • Data analysis using Excel, HTML, CSS, UX/UI, ONIX 3.0 (XML), Java, SQL, Python, API Integration
