Within Discover's Payment Services organization, we operate the Discover Network, PULSE, and Diners Club International networks supporting 345 million global cardholders spending over $589 billion on our network in 2023!

The Payments Innovation Team is seeking a Strategy Consultant to manage how we monitor, evaluate, and communicate information regarding trends and markets we believe have or will have an influence on the future of payments. The successful candidate establishes a trend's radar to identify the spaces we actively monitor, educate, and report on. They thoughtfully articulate plausible, possible, and probable implications with a keen sense of relevant detail and context considering the audience. They also have a keen eye to size or quantify the market and opportunities associated with trends and topics. The Strategy & Research Analyst actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.

Supports various stages of strategy development, including but not limited to evaluating and performing analysis for various strategy, business optimization, and business growth initiatives. Understands the payments market landscape. Conducts and may lead components of analysis, including research on the market landscape, financial analysis, and due diligence. Collaborates with internal and external relationships to support aspects of strategy development, business optimization, and business growth initiatives. Supports functional colleagues in the execution of initiatives. Fosters a culture of effective risk management, accountability, and demonstration of risk awareness across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and manage the Payments Innovation radar consisting of a set of topics and trends we believe are important to the future of payments.
  • Analyze current product and market strategies across key participants within the payments value chain. Conducts analysis on business opportunities and business projects.
  • Assess the strategic direction of the competitors through quarterly earnings calls and press releases.
  • Synthesize intelligence or trend data into perspectives and strategic recommendations for action.
  • Produce informative and educational content on abstract themes, topical market sizing and growth drivers for consumption across. Develops presentation materials regarding opportunities, analysis, and or transactions and recommendations to leadership. Leads components of presentations (e.g., financial technical analysis) to leadership.
  • Design a distribution model considering structures already in play to open content to varying parties across the organization.
  • In support of Innovation Engagements, research and contribute quantitative insights and assess the potential value of opportunities through building a business case.
  • Build an ecosystem of and manage intelligence providers/vendors.
  • Research and investigate industry trends and opportunities in support of Discover's strategy by independently selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Works on problems and projects of diverse scope related to advancing business objectives and growth strategies.
  • Coordinates with cross-functional teams and external resources to manage processes related to strategy development and required due diligence.


Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here's what we need from you:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management, or related field
  • 4+ years of experience in M&A, investment banking, corporate development, transaction advisory, consulting, or related
  • In lieu of a degree, 8+ years of experience in M&A, investment banking, corporate development, transaction advisory, consulting, or related


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration and Management, or related field
  • 4+ years of experience in Payments Industry
  • 2+ years of Communications experience
  • High degree of natural curiosity and lifelong learner
  • Desire of working in undefined and ambiguous spaces
  • Depth of experience with quantitative research, analysis, market sizing, and business case development
  • Skilled storyteller and communicator who can easily adjust the message to match level and point of interest within the organization
  • Comfortable structuring work, organizing, and managing execution of research across topics and asset types

Compensation:

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $88,500.00 to $149,300.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
