Reporting to the Chief Government Affairs and Community Relations Officer, the Business Development & Marketing Director at SJCH will be responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive strategic marketing and communications plan that aligns with the mission of SJCH. The Business Development & Marketing Director will provide proactive guidance on reputation and brand-building, communication strategies, digital marketing innovation, customer experience, and media relations. The role involves developing and executing a strategic plan for paid media, improving SJCH's online presence, and ensuring effective internal and external communications. The Business Development & Marketing Director will collaborate closely with leadership to support SJCH's mission and objectives through focused and impactful marketing and communication strategies. In addition, the Business Development & Marketing Director will oversee a digitally focused, data-driven communication strategy and specialize in creating and executing campaigns that leverage strategic communications, earned media, lobbying, and public affairs. This position places emphasis on advocacy, community engagement, and social justice in furthering SJCH's mission. The position is also responsible for leading, monitoring, and coordinating marketing and business development efforts within current markets as well as new potential target communities.

Education & Experience: A qualified candidate for this comprehensive role should have a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration, Health Administration, or a related field, with a Master s Degree being preferred, particularly in disciplines such as Business Administration (MBA), Public Health (MPH), Health Administration (MHA), or Marketing. The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of progressive experience in strategic planning, public affairs, marketing, communications, or a related field, preferably within the healthcare industry or a community health setting. They should have a proven track record of developing and implementing successful strategic communication and public affairs campaigns, including paid media, digital marketing, and social media management. Additionally, the candidate should have at least 5 years of experience in a leadership or senior management role, with direct responsibility for managing teams and leading cross-functional initiatives.

Experience with data analytics and the use of market research tools to inform decision-making is essential, as is demonstrated expertise in analyzing competitive market data and identifying growth opportunities. The candidate should also have a strong background in working closely with C-suite executives and other senior leaders, contributing to high-level strategic decision-making. Expertise in reputation management, brand management, and media relations, along with an established network of media contacts and stakeholders, is also crucial. The candidate should have experience in developing and executing public health or social justice campaigns, with a deep understanding of community engagement and outreach strategies.

Key competencies include strategic thinking, strong leadership and team management skills, and excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal. The candidate should be proficient in data analysis and interpretation, using data to drive strategic decisions, and possess strong relationship-building skills, enabling them to maintain and develop relationships with key stakeholders, including community partners, media outlets, and government officials. Finally, the candidate should be adaptable, able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and capable of managing multiple priorities effectively.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate possesses 5-7 years of experience in the following areas:

Strategic Planning and Execution:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for paid media communications across mail, TV, radio, and digital platforms.
  • Craft and disseminate engaging narratives that effectively communicate SJCH's mission and services to the community.
  • Build new and manage existing relationships with key community partners, health plans, schools, and other entities.
  • Develop and implement specific strategies and objectives to increase patient engagement in existing and new markets, tracking performance against targeted expectations and developing improvement plans as needed.
  • Compile and analyze competitive market-based data to identify target markets for clinic or service expansion.
  • Determine new growth opportunities through analytics and various data sources, including GIS, HRSA, UDS, and OSHPD analytics.
  • Use public and proprietary data to determine areas of need, market penetration, outmigration, and other attributes to support analysis and decision-making, including specific patient engagement strategies based on demographics.
  • Work with the C-Suite and customer experience/quality of care group to review data, aggregate patient information, benchmark results, and implement service improvements.
  • Coordinate with various departments to support organizational goals through targeted communication strategies.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to align public affairs efforts with organizational priorities and initiatives.

Public Affairs Leadership:

  • Serve as the senior strategic advisor and lead on public affairs initiatives to the C-Suite.
  • Support the Chief Government Affairs and Community Relations Officer in strengthening and deepening connections to key audiences and developing and leading efforts to expand SJCH s reach to new strategic audiences.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive public affairs strategies to promote the organization's mission and objectives regarding services, programs, and outreach campaigns.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, media outlets, reporters, and advocacy groups.
  • Serve as one of the spokespersons for the organization, effectively communicating its message and advocating for policies that address our patients and their community.
  • Support in the planning and execution of public events, forums, and campaigns to raise awareness of community health issues and engage the community in solutions.

Issue Campaigns & Movements:

  • Specialize in creating and running issue campaigns that leverage strategic communications, earned media, lobbying, and public affairs.
  • Tailor communication strategies to address SJCH s unique challenges and objectives, whether the issue is at the forefront of national, state, or local discourse, or requires a compelling narrative to break through.
  • Partner with campaign professionals to build authentic, powerful movements and campaigns that advance social justice causes.
  • Support issue campaigns, ballot measures, and independent expenditures with comprehensive campaign strategy and paid and earned communications.
  • Lead in building campaign infrastructure, preparing for media interviews and speeches, and creating advertising programs across television, mail, and digital platforms.

Digital and Social Media Management:

  • Maintain and oversee SJCH's online presence, including website content, social media channels, and online advocacy campaigns.
  • Develop and execute a compelling social media strategy to grow and engage our audience.
  • Leverage capabilities to promote SJCH s mission through outreach, advertising, and other targeted strategies.
  • Develop reputation management capabilities, processes, and technologies to ensure optimal customer perception of SJCH.

Marketing Data Analytics:

  • Utilize analytics tools to track campaign performance, measure ROI, and make data-driven decisions to optimize digital marketing efforts.
  • Regularly report on achievements and areas of opportunity.
  • Manage the digital marketing budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources and maximum ROI.
  • Analyze various scenarios in conjunction with the CFO to determine the viability of proposed growth opportunities.
  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of data management and data systems.

Performance Analysis:

  • Track and evaluate the effectiveness of public affairs activities using metrics and data analysis.
  • Continuously innovate and adapt strategies to enhance the reach and impact of SJCH's communications.
  • Work with the COO and others to ensure that synergies between Growth and Retention functions are effective and efficient.

Brand Management:

  • Oversee and update SJCH branding, public outreach materials, and graphic standards.
  • Ensure all communications are consistent with SJCH s brand and messaging.

Media Relations:

  • Prepare and distribute press releases, op-eds, and other communications materials to promote the organization's initiatives and achievements.
  • Build rapport and relationships with media audiences, policymakers, and government officials to be strategic and innovative thinkers.
  • Demonstrate competence in communicating with target audiences about programs and services, ensuring optimal positioning of SJCH through digital and print media.
